Birdo's origins trace back to the Family Computer Disk System game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (1987), where she served as a boss opponent. In the North American localization, Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988), her name was mistakenly switched with another enemy, Ostro, in the credits and manual. The first edition English manual described Birdo as thinking he is a girl and preferring the name 'Birdetta', leading to her interpretation as one of the earliest transgender characters in video games. Later printings omitted the mention of her being male, and subsequent games have varied in how they address her gender, sometimes referring to her with male pronouns or treating her as female.
