Lakitu belongs to the cloud-dwelling folk of the Mushroom Kingdom, a quiet race of small, mushroom-capped creatures who drift through the upper atmosphere on soft, self-propelled clouds. While most of the kingdom's residents live on the ground—tending gardens, running shops, or building castles—Lakitu and his kin keep to the sky, observing the world below with calm, wide-set eyes. This vantage point made him the natural choice to serve as the Mushroom Kingdom's official race referee, a role he has filled since the earliest Mario Kart tournaments. From his cloud he tracks every drift, every item pickup, and every ill-fated off-road tumble, calling the start and the finish with a voice that carries across the entire circuit.

In Their Own Story

The Grand Mushroom Cup, final lap. Rain slicks the Rainbow Road, and the pack is bunched tight behind a blur of red. Lakitu, in last place, feels the kart wobble on a wet patch and catches a sideways drift off the edge. His cloud kicks up a rooster tail of mist. For a heartbeat he is falling. Then the boomerang—his old referee's boomerang, the one he's carried since his first shift calling races—spins out of his hand, catches an updraft, and yanks him back over the lip of the track. He doesn't look back. He just accelerates, the cloud beneath his kart glowing faintly blue, and for one impossible lap the referee is the one everyone else is trying to overtake.

Personality quirks: He's the only driver who genuinely *enjoys* being the referee, which makes his in-race commentary a little too enthusiastic.
